WP Super Docs vs BetterDocs
Both are documentation plugins for WordPress. They are built for different jobs, and one of them is probably wrong for you. This page is written to help you work out which, including the parts where BetterDocs is the better answer.
The short version
Pick based on what you are documenting
Not on which feature list is longer. These two tools answer different questions, and the right one falls out of what your documentation actually has to do.
You want a knowledge base that matches your site
It is built around templates and the customizer, so your docs inherit your theme and sit visually continuous with the rest of your pages. If you are documenting one product for a general audience and want it to look like part of the site, that is the right shape.
It also has a free version. We do not.
You are shipping product documentation
Multiple products, versioned releases, developer facing content, or a docs subdomain that should not look like your marketing site at all. If you have ever needed to publish v1 and v2 documentation side by side, that is the deciding feature.
There is a migration path, and it needs no export file.
Under the hood
The real difference is where the docs render
Both plugins store documentation as a custom post type with a category taxonomy. What separates them is what happens at output time.
- BetterDocs renders through your theme. Docs go through templates and the customizer, so they inherit your header, your footer, and your content width.
- WP Super Docs renders its own document. Docs get their own HTML output with a dedicated topbar, sidebar, and footer, on a subfolder or a subdomain.
- That is a trade, not a win. Theme inheritance is genuinely better when you want visual continuity. It is a problem when your docs need a layout your theme cannot give them.
Same content, different container.
What to check
Six questions worth asking either vendor
We are not going to put checkmarks in a BetterDocs column. Their features change and ours would go stale, and a wrong claim about a competitor is worse than no claim. Here is what we do, and what to go and verify on their side.
Here: yes. Each product gets independent version sets, a switcher in the topbar, a cookie that remembers the reader's choice, sibling linking so switching lands on the same page, and a banner when someone is reading an older version.
Here: yes. Docs render into their own HTML document with their own topbar, sidebar, and footer, at a filterable base slug or on a subdomain.
Here: yes. Release notes per product with type badges and an RSS feed, plus one script tag that drops a what is new widget with an unread count into your own application.
Here: yes. Every query is logged and zero result searches are surfaced separately, which is the cheapest documentation roadmap there is.
Here: yes. Four editorial states with email and Slack alerts, expiring preview links for drafts, internal only docs, and a six point content health scan.
Here: yes. Built in search out of the box, automatic handover to SearchWP, Relevanssi, or Ivory Search, connectors for Algolia and Elasticsearch, and a JSON export endpoint if you run your own index.
Being fair
Where BetterDocs is the better answer
We wrote a BetterDocs importer, which should tell you we do not think it is a bad plugin. It is a good plugin aimed at a different job.
It has a free version
You can install it and try the core experience without spending anything. We do not offer that, and for a lot of people it is the deciding factor. What we have instead is a money back guarantee and a straight answer before you buy.
Templates and visual customisation
If you want to design your docs pages visually and have them match your theme exactly, that is built into how BetterDocs works in a way it is not here. Our docs look like docs, on purpose, and you configure rather than design them.
It is older and more widely installed
More tutorials, more forum answers, more people who have already hit whatever you are about to hit. That is worth real money when something breaks at an awkward moment.
It groups content already
BetterDocs has its own knowledge base grouping, so if all you need is to keep two sets of articles apart, you may not need products and versions at all. Our importer reads that grouping, which is how we know.
Simpler if you document one thing
Products, versions, changelogs, and review states are the reason to be here. Documenting a single product on a single release means most of that is overhead you will never open.
You may not need to move at all
If nothing on this page described a problem you actually have, the honest answer is to stay where you are. Migrating documentation costs a day you could spend writing it instead.
If you do switch
There is no export step
BetterDocs is already in your WordPress install, so the importer reads it straight from the database. Nothing in BetterDocs is modified, which means you can keep it running until you are happy with the result.
The only migration of the nine with no image work.
Still deciding
Tell us what your docs need to do.
Describe the setup and we will tell you straight which of the two fits. If it is BetterDocs, we will say so. There is a 14 day money back guarantee behind the purchase either way.
